Generally speaking, in this scenario, since she’s already been introduced to many foods, I would use the classic BLW shapes but feel pretty free to go with whichever foods you want to offer. You can also put the purees on a spoon and hand the spoon to her so she can feed it to herself, which she may like too. Once you see that she is starting to be able to pick up small pieces of foods between her fingers, which usually happens around 9 months, switch to very small pieces of foods. I hope that helps and let me know if not!

Hi! Thank you so much for your website, it has been very helpful. I started my baby at 4.5 months with purées as directed by her pediatrician. A month later she lost interest and at around 6.5-7 months I tried again. She won’t let me feed her purée and I have been very consistent with her, making sure to offer her a feeding every day. We would like to start BLW now as we noticed she likes to do things herself. She is turning 8 months next week. I was also wondering should we start from the beginning?

Hi, I’m sorry to hear that she’s been unwell and I hope things improve now. I would start using the classic finger-size pieces that you’d do starting at 6 months, but you can use a broader range of foods if you’d like due to her age and also because she’s had some purees. Simply offer some food 1-2 times a day according to your schedule and follow her lead as far as interest goes. And soon she’ll be able to pick up small pieces of food with her fingers, so tiny pieces of soft foods may be an option here soon. I am also happy to offer more suggestions via email if you’d like.

Thank you for this informative article. I did both BLW and homemade baby food with my twins. They are toddlers now, but I’ll definitely share this information in my blog post. Sharonda Jackson – A Dozen Hands

Typically you start with one meal and gradually add another and another so by the first birthday baby is eating three meals at roughly the same time as you. The amount of formula often stays the same for a while or may simply depend on baby’s appetite and actual intake. There are some sample baby feeding schedules here https://www.yummytoddlerfood.com/baby-feeding-schedules-and-sample-meal-plans/

How often do you feed them solids when just starting out, one meal a day? When is avg to transition to 3 solid meals, and how does formula amount correlate?

With her at that age, I would offer the banana in small pieces that she can pick up. Let her keep practicing picking up the finger foods as it may take her more time to master eating them, you could try making the pieces a smidge larger, and you could try mashing them into a spoon at times which may be a way that she could feed herself without losing a lot of food on the way. It can take some kids practice time though and you could also be sure to sit with her and exaggerate a demonstration of how to eat the food you offer so she can copy you. I hope that helps!

Thank you , really helpful! I have a few questions
1. When I offered banana, my baby took a huge bite and I was terrified of choking. How do you ensure they take a small bite?
2. When I offer finger foods, she squishes them into tiny pieces and hardly anything goes in her mouth. She is almost 10 months! She’s been mostly on purées 😞. Any advice?
